SIPISO-PISO WATER FALL
When one travel to the heart of North Sumatra it is always centered in Medan city, Berastagi, Parapat and Lake Toba with its island of Samosir. This area is not lack of natural attraction such as water fall known as sipiso-piso a Batak people word. This is the second highest fall in Indonesia after that of Asahan water fall in Aceh, and is one of the highest in Asia. It is supposed to stream from under ground river that meets the northern steep wall of lake Toba crater falling perpendicularly 120 meters to the lake water level.
The area of Northern lake is belong to the region of Karo Batak people, where Tongging fishing village is the closest. The closest town from Tongging is Kabanjahe, the capital city of Karo highland which is only 25 kms away. For travelers there is a place to see the water fall where can park the car, enjoy some light meal or just have drink while enjoying the water fall. One can also step down on the slope of the ravine to get closer to the fall, but it is not recommended for common travelers as the trek is quiet demanding and a bit dangerous, it would be enough to enjoy or taking photoes from the parking area. From here also we can see the beautiful view of the south where is lake Toba with its blue color during the sky is bright and looks very wide. It is hard to imagine how big was the eruption in the past that created such a wide caldera yet now is a big mass of water at the height of 1000 meters above sea level.
Aside from the beauty of the lake and mountain views, sipiso-piso water fall, the history of tradition of Batak people living around the lake and on the island of Samosir are not less interesting, their house architecture, dances, and plastic art, and other artifacts.
