BERASTAGI MOUNTAIN RESORT
Berastagi is a small town high on the mountain chain of Sumatra located 60 kms south of Medan city. This mountain town is well known as the mountain resort of Batak Karo land with nice temperature and beautiful panorama. The town is the capital city of Kecamatan government an administrative region under Kabupaten. This area also offers many interesting places from natural views to the farming product and mountaineering adventures. As favorite destination Berastagi offers many type of accommodation from non star up to deluxe class hotels.
Berastagi town can be compared with Bogor and Puncak in West Java for the resident of Jakarta city, while Berastagi is week end recreation for the resident of Medan city. Medan is the third biggest city of Indonsia, developing from agriculture and plantation estates. The popularity of Berastagi is not only for the local residents but also for overseas travelers to enjoy its beauties and nice temperature. Two mountain peaks those are Sibayak and Sinabung are the most interesting for travel adventures since decades, although since 2013 Mount Sinabung shows very active conditions until today and has damaged the farming areas and the life of the people close to its slope.
1. Hot Water Source known as Lau Debuk-Debuk
This hot water spring is located at a village called Doulu on the foot of Mount Sibayak on the south around 10 kms from Berastagi town accessible by small car. The hot spring indicates that the volcano is active. There are swimming pools constructed by the people offered to the visitors to enjoy hot water bath. The entrance is only Rp 8.000 per person to have bath at their hot spring pool.
2. Bukit Gundaling
Bukit means hill and is a hill of Gundaling seen from Berastagi with its breathtaking views of nature, Mount Sinabung visible so beautiful from the hill. One can hang around on horseback while enjoying such nice temperature.
Penatapan is also a vintage point from where beautiful views of Berastagi town can be seen. Travelers usually come to this place to enjoy steamed or barked young cons. There are also wild monkeys in this area people can see closely.
4. Sikulikap Waterfall
The location of this water fall is 11 kms before Berastagi from Medan, 800 meter from main road must walk through steps and path on the slope of the river. This area is in the border of Kabupaten Karo and Kabupaten Deli Serdang. The volume of the water is quiet big falls around 30 meters, and the wind can be felt from a distance of 25 meters from the fall. The area is still dense rain forest where the source of the water come from the slope of Bukit Barisan mountain chain.
5. Taman Alam Lumbini
Lumbini national park offers beautiful panorama, as it is high altitude giving a nice temperature and beautiful views of hills and evergreen nature. In the park has been built a beautiful Buddhist Pagoda showing similarity of those in Thailand. The pagoda is the biggest in Indonesia, with golden color decoration known with the name of Vihara Lumbini.
6. Kebun Raya Tongkoh
Is a natural park with some greeneries can be brought home taken from the farming belong to the people as souvenir with cheap price. The farmers grow markisa, oranges, vegetables, strawberries and various horticultures. One can walk around the farm just to enjoy the environment.
7. Desa Lingga
Lingga village located 15 kms before Berastagi on the direction to Medan, is an old village of Batak Karo highland. The architecture of original Karo Batak houses from hundreds of years are still preserved, and one has been used as museum to preserve the relic of Karo kingdom. This village is always written on the brochure of travel or any travel publication about north Sumatra
