Berastagi town is located around 76 kms south of Medan city, and with its location high on the mountain hill on the slope of Bukit Barisan, it has a stunning view of the nature beside its confortable climate. This small town has become the week end refuge for the residents of Medan. Many hotels from simple to four star hotels are now available in this small town. Not only local travellers but also form other countries, in the past Dutch people were in great number visiting north Sumatra and used Berastagi as one of overnight stop on their way to Lake Toba or even up to West Sumatra to the country of Minangkabau.

Mount Sibayak and Mount Sinabung is 2 peaks of Bukit Barisan mountain chaine in the area of Berastagi. These two mountains are very popular for mountaineers. Since 2010 Mount Sinabung always erupting with strong sprewing ash and materials from its crater, causing the people in the villages within the radius of 5 kms can not do their activities and damaging their houses. The eruptions also forces the people to refuge to places further from the radius affected by eruption with temporary shelters.

Newly built beautiful Buddhist pagoda of Lumbini near the town of Berastagi is one of the interesting places there, water spring called Lau Debuk-debuk is also very interesting place to see. Not less interesting is the traditional market of Berastagi where local highland products such as various fruits, vegetables and greeneries can be seen on array.
